I would like to grow hybridomas in 1 % FCS or even in serum-free conditions. Which approach seems to be better - to condition cells to 1% FCS before CellMax or in the cartridge? Any suggestions?

Either will work but the Cellmax cartridges are made for a reduced or even serum free environment.  Due to the efficiency of the fibers, normal 10% fbs can be reduced to 5% fbs with no adverse effects.  If you want, just lower the fbs by half each media change and measure the cell growth.  This way, you don't have to worry about any flask cultures and can save time.
