| I have recently heard from several users that Hyclone and Gibco media yielded more vital cultures for them than when the equivalent media was used from Mediatech. The formulations appeared to be identical to the Mediatech recipe, yet the attached cells that the users were growing appeared to thrive in the other two versions. Has anyone made similar observations? | | |

 | There can be differenced in the same media formulation prepared by different suppliers....however there can be differences from one lot to the next from the same supplier. The differences are often caused by differeneces in the components used in the media. I have experince auditing both Gibco and Hyclone (as well as other media suppliers) and know that they have extensive raw materials testing programs to make sure that their raw materials provide similar growth from one lot to the next. I have experience with many of the other media suppliers and know that they have the same types of programs....however I don't know if Mediatech has that type of program in place. They should be willing to share with you their raw materials testing program and the results of their growth assays on each and every lot that they produce.
There has been a persistent rumor for more that the past 5 years that Mediatech produces media that doesn't grow cells well yet I have never seen one iota of data to back that up. If I had concerns that the media was inferior I would set up my own comparison with several different cell lines making sure that the forumations were truely identical. To that extent I would make sure that the formulations being tested were glutamine free and were supplemented just before use. I would also try to obtain media that have the same expiration dates.
So I guess to answer your question....I have heard the story several times but I have never been able to get anyone to show me data demonstrating the problem...
